The NFL is crazy

The Steelers lost to the Browns and Raiders.

The Titans had the best record in football last year and started 0-6.

The Patriots suck.

Brett Favre is 100 years old and playing lights out.

The Saints are one of the worst franchises in NFL history and sit at 13-0.

The Bengals are a lock for the playoffs.

There is craziness all over the league.  A team is amazing one year and not the next.

While all the other teams are experiencing ups and downs, the Rams have 1 win and will draft in the top 2 for the 2nd straight year.

Sports are interesting because any team can win on any given sunday.  When you already know the outcome week in and week out for 3-4 straight seasons, it’s just depressing.

I tried to listen to 1380AM, once

1380 used to be ESPN Radio in St. Louis. I used to listen during my daily commute. Their broadcast would cross paths with some evangelists sermon and that just got confusing.

They have since moved to 101.1 FM, thankfully.

On Tuesday, I was bored with the Nth consecutive day of discussing Tiger Woods brothel tour 200x-09 on ESPN radio, so I decided to check out 1380AM’s new lineup.

“… I agree, the Rams need to trade Steven Jackson, draft Tim Tebow in the 1st round and get a WR with the pick they get for Jackson”, the caller says on the Kevin Slaten show.

I know most fans that call in to these shows are idiots, but the fact that the host didn’t immediately offer the caller some suggestions for getting off the crack cocaine tells me everything I need to know about the show between 2pm and 6pm on 1380.  He hates his callers, doesn’t even watch football or he is a 49ers fan, which is fine, but he should not be hosting a show in St Louis if that is the case.

Breaking down the callers’ asinine idea:

1. Trading Jackson

  • Only if it saved a bunch of cap space so you could sign multiple needs, but 2010 is probably going to be uncapped year.
  • The Rams have zero depth at running back.  The backups are special teams players at best and probably won’t be Rams in ’10.
  • Here’s the only scenario for moving SJ.  Jackson to New Orleans for Brees and Colston.  That’s about as likely as the Rams drafting Tebow with the first overall pick.

2. Drafting Tim Tebow in Round 1

  • Nope.
  • Stats Inc. has 3 QB’s rated in top 32 (Locker, Bradford, Clausen)
  • The dude won’t be an NFL quarterback
  • The Rams history of drafting a qb and switching his position isn’t real hot (see Eric Crouch)
  • Drafting any QB in ’10 early is gambling with your franchise

3. WR (draft) for Jackson

  • You are still short a running back
  • Rookie WR rarely make the difference, without a cast especially
  • We need a true #1 WR.  I think you only find that in free agency with a corp. so young.

I’m a fan of Tim McKernan.  That’s the only reason I am even familiar with the new 1380.  His ever-growing InsideSTL is a mixed bag and he seems willing to try anything and take some risks. I dig it. I need to give his show in the morning on 1380, a listen.  However, if I hear him mention the Rams drafting Tebow in round 1 the whole stations credibility will be gone.
